Designer's Diary & Desktop Denotations

Every now and then, I'll share a piece of wisdom here, let you in on some interesting discovery, talk about business in general, or web design in particular - or I'll just rant :) Enjoy!

Migrating to Joomla 1.7

Well, if you decide to run any kind of software on (or as) your website, you ought to keep up with upgrades, patches, etc. We just went through the migration from Joomla 1.5 to 1.7 and lemme tell ya, it's not for the faint at heart. One wrong click and everything could just poof. Hours of finding updates for existing extensions or grudgingly go looking for others that are compatible with J1.7 and will do close to what you need.

Chances are, you aren't noticing much difference in our site since we stuck with the same template and luckily only had to make minor changes in terms of extensions. By far the biggest change is our new portfolio; the beautiful component we had is not and will not be compatible with 1.7. Boohoo. I'd like to point out though, that while all of this is a bit of a pain, it's also a great opportunity to 'clean house'. Refresh some content, polish up some wording, incorporate new sources, etc. And, of course  most importantly, make your website a little more secure. Happy migration!
