Google Webmaster Tools

If your website's placement in popular (read, Google) search engines is important to you, I'd strongly encourage you to have a closer look at Google Webmaster Tools. Since the re-launch of our site I had to make sure that we had crossed all the t's and dotted all the i's (or however that goes) - and many of the interviews with Matt Cutts I'm reading and watching keep sending me right back to Webmaster Central...

While I was aware that the keyword meta tag does no good when it comes to Google, I had no idea about the (non) use of some other tags. Of course, there ARE other seach engines beside Google. But how important are they? Have you checked your website statistics lately? I went through ours again just this week. 84% of our traffic from search engines comes from Google. Which is not a huge surprise, really. I'm still in awe at the phenomenal marketing/branding success of Google. In the movies, in TV shows, lawyers, criminologists, teenagers, teachers.. you name it.. everybody 'googles' something. They don't research - nope... they GOOGLE.

Wouldn't I love designing a website become known as 'gawding'!? Hmm. Doesn't really work, does it? Oh well...

Seriously, you should have a look at Webmaster Tools - and of course, give us a shout to make corrections, or add something to your own site's 'unseen' data.
